Spring Fling Writing Contest Announcement

Hi friends,

I have some fantastic news: my critique partner, Ciara O’Neal, and I are hosting a writing contest this April!

It’s going to be a blast, and we have some AMAZING prizes lined up for the winners. If you like writing or know someone who does, check out and share the site with the full details.

And now for a bit more fun, here’s my example story with .gif included:

SPLASH

(Word count: 150)

“PUDDLES!” I yell.
Splish!

Splash!

Sploosh!

MeOW!

“Oops! I’m sorry, kitty.”

I splashed him. Now he’s shivering.

Scooping him up, I take him straight to our fireplace.

When I wake, he’s curled up on my belly.

I pet him and whisper, “You’re okay now, Splash.” He purrs softly.

We’re inseparable after that.

Well, almost.

Splash refuses to go outside.

Until one day we hear a kitten yowling.

“She’s stuck!” I shout.

Splash peeks out the door then scurries back inside.

The kitten yowls again.

Splash puts one paw out the door. But water splashes him, and he jumps back again.

The kitten’s yowl becomes a scream, and Splash bounds into the rain.

Clutching the kitten in his mouth, Splash rushes her to the fireplace.

Now when I go outside, Splash and Sploosh come with me, splishing through puddles, knowing we have each other and a cozy fireplace waiting at home.

I hope you enjoyed this example Spring Fling Writing Contest story!

If you want to compete, make sure to check out the site and share with all your friends.

As always, on the MathIsEverywhere blog, we ask, where’s the math?

What first comes to my mind from this animal adoption story is the number of stray cats still out there. Despite insufficient data bases on the subject, the estimated number of stray cats in the US alone is in the tens of millions. Check out more here or here.

For happier thoughts, try out Math Puddle Jumping! It’s a super fun math game that you can play and learn about here.

Lastly, I hope for a large volume of entries and a great number of new writing friends. Can’t wait to see your gifs and read your creative, inventive, and wonderful stories.

Sincerely,

Kaitlyn Leann Sanchez

PS. I had a blast writing many example stories for the contest, so keep a lookout for further posts from me with Spring Fling stories.

  1. What an awesome opportunity to do something like this. I was just thinking what contest is next. Hoping to participate. Love the GIF concept. Did your Valentiny entry inspire that?

    1. Aw I’m so glad, can’t wait to read your entry! I love that you remember my valentiny story was based on a picture. What a logical conclusion, but I’ll have to ask my CP, Ciara, she actually came up with that idea. Insider tip, this story was actually just what came to me when I thought of Spring, then I found a gif to go with itπŸ˜† sneaky, I know πŸ˜ŠπŸ˜‰

  3. Thanks so much for hosting this contest, Kaitlyn. Such a strong gathering of fun spring stories!

I like your “Splash.” When I was little, I had a kitty named Puddles, but that wasn’t because of rain…He was a sweetie, anyway.
