Today is Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2020! I was lucky enough to be a reviewer for this year, so I was gifted a beautiful book that I’m going to share with you below. This book absolutely blew me away. Authors Rebecca Flansburg and B.A. Norrgard pull you in and take you on a beautiful journey. No wonder their project was supported by the Five Wings Art Council as well as the McKnight Foundation!

When I first opened the book, I was surprised to see so many words on the first page, but each one is worth it. You really feel like you’re a part of this family and their experience.

The book starts of course with a happy girl in a big house and a big, comfy bed who suddenly gets told her family is going to downsize. She apprehensive at first, but after reading about it and learning about the Tiny life from new friends, she starts to like the idea.

I especially love that you go through the whole process of getting rid of stuff, the excitement of seeing the small house for the first time, and exploring it with the family.

It’s so fun to go on this super interesting adventure with this diverse, interracial family, especially because they look and feel so real in this picture book.

This book is so cool to share with all the kids in your life, whether you’re thinking about going Tiny, you want to share about a different lifestyle, or you just want an adorable book to share with kids, this one will delight all readers!

Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2020 (1/31/20) is in its 7th year! This non-profit children’s literacy initiative was founded by Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen; two diverse book-loving moms who saw a need to shine the spotlight on all of the multicultural books and authors on the market while also working to get those book into the hands of young readers and educators.  

Seven years in, MCBD’s mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in homes and school bookshelves continues.
