Today we have our seventeenth prize donor in our Prize Donor Feature Series. She’s one of the my dream illustrators and just the coolest person…
🎉 Charlene Chua🎉
Charlene is donating a picture book or first chapter of a graphic novel dummy critique.
What is your favorite thing about spring?
I like the colors that Spring brings. The new greens always seem the brightest, and it’s nice to see things come back to life after Winter.
Spring is full of surprises bursting forth, what’s something you’ve found surprising about the publishing industry?
Not so much for myself, but I have been very surprised on how much subsidiary rights can bring in.
Can you tell us a bit about your most recent book?
My latest book is Going Up! (by Sherry J. Lee/ Kids Can Press). It comes out on Apr 7, and we were supposed to have a massive launch for it in Toronto! Unfortunately that is now not happening (it’s ok though – stay home, stay safe!). The book is quite special for me as it’s a celebration of community and diversity, and it is my first (almost fully) painted picture book. It also has a special double gatefold spread at the end, which basically opens up to a 4 page wide illustration. I’m pretty proud we managed to get that in!
Charlene Chua is the illustrator of several picture books, including Amy Wu and the Perfect Bao (by Kat Zhang/Aladdin), The Wind Plays Tricks (by Virginia Howard/ Albert Whitman), Shubh Diwali! (by Chitra Soundar/Albert Whitman) and the forthcoming title, Going Up! (Sherry J. Lee/Kids Can Press). When not drawing, she enjoys cooking, video games and playing with her cats. Charlene lives in Hamilton, ON, Canada
Charlene is one of the 18 wonderful prize donors for the Spring Fling Kidlit Contest 2020 that starts on April 7th (the same day you’ll hopefully be buying a copy of Going Up! and sending Charlene Book Birthday wishes on social media!) Make sure to follow her on social media, read her books, and review them to show your support! And get gif-searching or creating!
