  • What is your favorite thing about spring?

All the brand new green. I love any reminder that winter is not the end of the story.

  • Spring is full of surprises bursting forth, what’s something you’ve found surprising about the publishing industry?

I’m always blown away by how dear my critique partners have become to me. Just a few years ago I didn’t know them, and now they’re some of my dearest friends. Overall, really, the kidlit community is so rich with good people, I’m grateful to be a part of it.

  • Can you tell us a bit about your debut book?

Happily! MY SHAPE IS SAM is about a square named Sam. He lives in a world where everyone has a job, depending on their shape. Squares build and stack, circles roll and spin. But Sam wants to roll like a circle, so the story is really about challenging expectations and living authentically.

Amanda’s Bio

Amanda writes stories for kids and their grown-ups (and she’s pretty sure there’s nothing better).

She grew up in Pennsylvania, where she discovered her love of making: drawing, crafting, sewing, cooking, storytelling. Anything to give her imagination a voice.
When she was six, someone gave her a journal. She instantly felt at home with the magic that happens when words come from inside, pass across the page, and connect with someone else.

In her twenties, Amanda moved to Portland, Oregon, and cozied right into the land of gray skies and creative living. She finished her degree in Human Development, worked with lots of awesome kids, and married her love.
Of all the happies in her life, writing is one of the happiest. And she’s thrilled to share her words with you.
Amanda is represented by the wonderful Charlotte Wenger of Prospect Agency. MY SHAPE IS SAM was published by Page Street Kids Publishing in the fall of 2019, and is distributed by Macmillan. She is a member of SCBWI and the Authors Guild.

  1. My Shape is Sam has a wonderful message without being preachy. So clever. I was lucky enough to win a critique with Amanda from a different contest, and she is generous and thorough and gave me great suggestions. Lucky you if you’re the winner!

  2. How exciting to see Amanda as a prize donor! Anybody would be lucky to win a critique from her. And I share that feeling about spring – it reminds us winter isn’t the end of the story. Great interview, Amanda. Thank you!
